Galeria 13 is a hostel located in the heart of Pelourinho -- Salvador's Centro Histórico -- and owned and run by Paulo George Denning Martinho. Why the mix of Portuguese and English names? Paulo was born in Portuguese-speaking Mozambique of parents with English ancestry, his family fleeing Mozambique's civil war in 1976 and settling in England, where his grandfather opened a bakery. It was at the bakery that Paulo learned to bake and cook, something he loved doing and an apprenticeship well put to use in his hostel's vegetarian kitchen. Later Paulo would spend time as a dive guide in Dahab, Egypt, on the Red Sea, eventually returning to Mozambique where he was a startup staff member of the Bamboozi Beach Lodge on Tofo Bay.
In January of 2008, shortly before Carnival, Paulo opened his own place in Salvador, Bahia, and rest is history to be made!
